Great news! On March 29, the Food and Drug Administration approved Narcan, the opioid overdose antidote, will be sold over-the-counter in drug stores sometime this summer. This is a medication that we recommend for everyone have in their medicine cabinet, purse, gym bag, etc., basically wherever you encounter people. You never know when you will need to save a life!
Narcan (also known as Naloxone) is a nasal spray that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose.
You don’t have to wait until the summer to get Narcan.Â
You can currently obtain Narcan from many pharmacies in New York State. This typically will be billed thru your insurance with a small copay, or a larger copay if you do not have insurance.  Click here for more information on the current pharmacy program.
This will not replace the free Narcan that is provided by Spectrum Health and other agencies.  In collaboration with the Erie County Opioid Task Force, Spectrum Health provides Narcan and training on how to use it, free of charge, to any person who attends any of our community events or walks into any one of our clinics and requests a kit. You can also text the Erie County Department of Health at 716-225-5473  with your mailing address and a kit with two doses will be mailed directly to your home.
You can also receive a Narcan kit and free training on the second Friday of every month at the Town of West Seneca Community Center, 1300 Union Rd. Â Look for us in the atrium near the library entrance of Friday April 14, 2023, from Noon to 3pm.
