What is Mental Health?

Here at Spectrum Health & Human Services, we know that physical health and mental health are not mutually exclusive.

Oftentimes, people who are overcoming mental health and/or substance use are struggling with physical health. Or vice-versa!

When it comes to living a gratifying life, we believe that taking care of your mind and emotional state is just as important as getting your daily dose of vegetables.

That being said, we know a lot of you are asking:

What is mental health, and how can I improve mine?

We’re glad you asked!

The World Health Organization defines Mental Health as:

a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

So if someone were to be diagnosed with a mental illness- it simply means that it is something (chemical or physiological) coming against that ability to think, feel, behave, or interact with others.

In the same way that it is possible for you to have poor physical health without an actual illness, it is possible for you to have poor mental health.

It’s also possible for you to improve!

If you or a loved one is feeling the need to self-isolate, low energy, or consistently “on-edge”, it’s possible you could use a little boost! Doing things like a mental spring clean, or practicing mindfulness could help to improve your overall mental health.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your health is reach out and ask for help. If you or a loved one is struggling in this area, a member of our team would love the opportunity to talk with you!
