My name is Brianna and I am a clinician at Spectrum Health’s Southtowns Counseling Center in West Seneca. I have worked for Spectrum Health for seven years and have worked in the clinic setting for four years. I work mainly with the adult population with substance use disorders. I also conduct our impaired drivers’ evaluations two days per week. I work closely with the courts throughout WNY and the DMV to coordinate care while clients are linked with the legal system.

According to NYS DMV Traffic Safety Law Enforcement and Disposition, New York recorded more than 47,000 alcohol- and drug-impaired driving tickets in 2024, with alcohol impairment accounting for nearly 92% of those violations. Driving while impaired by alcohol significantly increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents, serious injury, and death. Individuals who drive under the influence may also face legal consequences including arrest, fines, incarceration, loss of driving privileges, increased insurance premiums, and long-term impacts on employment and personal responsibilities.

Effective prevention strategies include using a designated driver, utilizing rideshare services, taxis, or public transportation, and arranging to stay overnight when alcohol use is involved. Individuals can also reduce risk by limiting alcohol intake, pacing drinks over time, and avoiding riding with anyone who appears impaired. Encouraging friends and family members to make responsible transportation plans further supports community safety and helps prevent alcohol-related accidents.
